What should I know about Nikiti?

Nikiti is located at a distance of 109 kilometers from the airport of Thessaloniki and is located right between the peninsulas of Kassandra and Sithonia.

It is a small town with many natural beauties and a long coastline. In the summer months, Nikiti is flooded with Greek and foreign tourists who either live in the city or visit it to swim on its beautiful beach or to be served by the multitude of shops that exist.

If you are looking for something different, then this is the place for you! Apart from the cosmopolitan new beach part of Nikiti there is also the old traditional village. So, if you want peace and quiet, go for a visit to the Old Town of Nikiti, a wonderful traditional village, with Macedonian stone houses with flowery balconies and courtyards.

Here, walking along narrow cobbled streets, you can admire the beautiful, restored, stone houses, with the inner courtyard, paved with stone tiles and with wooden balconies with flowers. You can walk to the stone church of Agios Nikitas and then go down to the area with the big maple (a great-looking and fast-growing deciduous tree used in parks, squares, arbors and also for garden shade) and sit in a tavern enjoying traditional cuisine.

According to oral tradition, the old village of Nikiti was founded by refugees from the neighboring coastal settlements of Elia, Kastri and Agios Georgios, who were forced to move deeper inland to avoid pirate raids. Nikiti survived the turbulent years before and after the fall of the Byzantine Empire and during the Turkish occupation it was one of the largest villages in Halkidiki.

After the liberation from the Turks in 1912, Nikiti continued to develop and gradually new houses were built closer to the sea. Many houses were abandoned and the old village declined. However, the tourist boom of the end of the 20th century revived interest in the historical settlement of Nikiti.

Little by little and mainly from 2000 onwards, many private individuals bought the old houses and renovated them while the Municipality took care to restore the cobbled alleys, the small square with the sycamore tree while the Folklore and History Museum of Nikiti was also created, which is housed in the old elementary school. So combine a visit to the museum, which is only open during the summer and with free entry, with a leisurely stroll through the narrow cobbled streets of the upper Nikiti neighborhood.
