According to mythology the Muses were born in Pieria and lived in the Pierian Mountains. They were the Goddesses of music, musical instruments, dance, feasts and poetry. Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and seat of the Greek gods, rises in the southern part of Pieria. The length of the coast of Pieria exceeds 100 km and every year, during the summer months, the beaches of the prefecture are filled with tourists. The main beaches are Pieria Beach, Neoi Poori, Methoni, Leptokarya, Platamonas, Skotina (where there is also the EOT campsite), Variko, Gritsa Litochoro, Korinos and Katerinoskala or Olympic Beach. Many of the prefecture’s beaches have also received Blue Flags.
