What should I know about Litochoro?

Litochoro is located at a distance of 114 km from Thessaloniki airport. It is built on the slope of the highest peak of Olympus (Mytikas, 2,918 m.) and yet is only a few kilometers from the sea, making it an ideal destination at all times of the year! The picturesque town stands out for its traditional Macedonian style architecture and the alternations of the rich vegetation that surrounds it, in an exquisite aesthetic harmony. It is an important tourist resort with an excellent hotel infrastructure and the most common starting point for mountaineering excursions to the “mountain of the gods”.

Worth seeing:

• The old traditional settlement of the town, with its narrow streets and houses of typical Macedonian architecture. Among the old houses, you can also notice the “bairia”, i.e. the small neighborhood squares.
• The pine tree-lined organized park “Katounia” (at the entrance of the city), where there is, among other things, a sports and cultural center, as well as the Maritime Museum, which reflects the rich maritime tradition of the place.
• The picturesque chapel of Agia Paraskevi
• In the grove of the Holy Apostles you will see the homonymous church and enjoy the frozen water of Olympus in the fountain there. At the highest point of this route, there is the chapel of Prophet Ilias, from where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the area.
• The new monastery of Agios Dionysios. The monastery was moved to its current location, after the destruction by the Germans in 1943 of the impressive old fortified monastery (16th century). Here, there is also an important Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum, which includes historical manuscripts and rare ecclesiastical vessels and vestments. Finally, a small church has been built under a sycamore tree in honor of Agios Kosmas of Aitolos, who preached in the shade of the tree during the Turkish occupation.
• The old Monastery of Agios Dionysios, which is undergoing restoration work as well as the cave of the Agios, following a 30-minute walking route inside Mount Olympus and admiring the wonderful nature of the mountain.
• To explore the “mythical” mountain of Olympus. From the “Mills” location, on the outskirts of the town, the beautiful route begins in the gorge of the river Enipeas. The Olympus National Park, with landscapes of incomparable beauty, is the first National Park of Greece. Since 1981, Olympus has been declared by UNESCO a preserved part of the world biosphere. In Litochoro is also the Information Center of the Olympus National Forest Agency, which presents the natural wealth and multifaceted uniqueness of Olympus.
• Visit the Archaeological site of Dion. Dion is a destination for thousands of visitors from Greece and all over the world every year. Also, a large number of visitors gather at the same time during cultural events that take place in the ancient Hellenistic theater.
• The Municipal Gallery of Litochoro “Vasilios Ithakisios”, where one can admire the works of the artist Philopoimenos Konstantinidis (1909-1992).
