What should I know about Platamonas?

Platamonas is located at a distance of 130 km from Thessaloniki airport. According to tradition, it owes its name either to the many plane trees found in the area or to the wide sandy beaches of its beaches.

Platamonas has a long coastline. Many petals that you can swim even when the weather is not good. Kilometers of beaches with golden sand, beaches with large pebbles and crystal waters. It is a place with a lot of green and Mount Olympus dominating the backs of the village. The beaches of Platamonas have been awarded many times with “blue beach flags”.

It is inhabited by 2000 permanent residents all year round. But in the summer the population multiplies and reaches up to 20,000 inhabitants. Many Larissaians and Macedonians (from Veria, Naoussa etc.) have their summer homes here. The permanent residents are engaged in fishing and mainly in tourism. In recent years, the area has developed as a tourist destination. Many new luxury hotel units have appeared. While the old ones were renovated and the area receives crowds of tourists mainly from Europe and the former Eastern countries (Poland, Romania, Serbia etc.).

Worth doing:

• Morning hike to the castle of Platamonas, for a visit to the medieval castle. Built in a strategic position, it stands proud for hundreds of years and controls the road of Northern and Southern Greece. It is a well-preserved castle with an imposing central tower. If you happen to be in Platamonas in summer, you can also attend a concert at the castle, as part of the Olympus festival.
• A walk from Platamonas and along the old railway line, a wonderful route by the sea and greenery and reach the beach of Panteleimons passing through the old gallery. The castle dominates directly above it.
• A paragliding ride to see the area from above. You will see Old Panteleimon, the beaches of Pieria, the castle of Platamonas, the villages and beaches of the wider area.
• Early in the morning a walk in the port of Platamonas, when the fishing boats have returned and the nets with their fish have been spread, sorting them.
• Sit in a fish tavern and enjoy a plate of seafood, small fish and a cold beer or ouzo. Platamonas is famous for its fish taverns and its fish.
• Visit Paleo Panteleimon, a traditional settlement, just 8 km from Platamonas. At an altitude of 440 meters, which has been used in recent years after being abandoned by the inhabitants, and enjoy traditional food and grilled local meats in its taverns. Try roast lamb and rooster with noodles. Visit and light a candle in his church
