What should I know about Ierissos?

Ierissos is located at a distance of 125 kilometers from the airport of Thessaloniki and is an attraction for many tourists, Greeks and foreigners.

Ierissos is the oldest and largest village in the area and at the same time a beautiful and modern coastal town with award-winning beaches and a rich historical and cultural heritage. Historically, it is the continuation of the ancient Akanthou, which was a colony of the Andrians from the 7th century BC and an important city of Macedonia. The walled city got its name either from the many thorns in the area, or from the thorn-like formation of the fortification. Of the ruins, the most impressive are the walls of the acropolis, since sections with a height of up to 8 meters have been preserved!

The current settlement was built from scratch when the old one was razed – after the very deadly 7 Richter earthquake of 1932, which had its epicenter right here, close to the sea. As proved by the excavations, the current city is built on the ancient cemetery of Akanthos.

One of the important attractions in the area of Ierissos is the tower of Krona, which is located approximately 1 kilometer northwest of the town.

The Ierissiotes are considered throughout time to be great ship carpenters, continuing an ancient art from generation to generation. The shipyards of Ierissos are among the oldest in Greece, with famous ship carpenters and are definitely worth a visit. It also has a fishing fleet.

Ierissos is a holiday center, with modern tourist infrastructure (hotels, rooms for rent, beach bars, taverns and cafe-bars) and a beautiful coastal promenade that make it a unique vacation spot.

  • The Cultural Center of Ierissos, which has the first digital stereoscopic video projection (3D) amphitheater in Greece, where, among other things, with the help of special glasses, one can enjoy a magical Tour of Mount Athos in 5 languages (Greek, German, Bulgarian, Serbian, and Russian). The Seafarer, Aesop’s Fables and Hercules’ Games are also shown.

The distance from Thessaloniki airport is 1.5 hours and you can choose a type of car for your transport, such as taxi or minivan.
