What should I know about Nea Chalkidona?

Chalkidona is located approximately 56 kilometers from Thessaloniki airport. It is located northwest of Thessaloniki on the west bank of the Axios, near the border with the prefecture of Pella. Chalkidona, during the time of Alexander the Great, was one of the most important and largest commercial centers of Macedonia as the mint and the port were located there.

Of course, the area was not called Chalkidona but Ichnes. During the Byzantine era, Chalcedon was a habitable area in which there was and still is today a cemetery and the Holy Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul which is considered a protected archaeological monument. Refugees from eastern Thrace settled mainly in the village. So, in 1926, following a decision by the Greek government, the village was renamed Nea Chalkidona.
