What should I know about Palaios Agios Athanasios?

The city of Katerini is located at a distance of 95 km from the airport of Thessaloniki. Katerini is the capital of Pieria. One of the popular summer resorts is Paralia tis Katerinis.

It is unknown how long it existed as a town. The city appears under the name of Ekaterini or Agia Ekaterini until the beginning of the 20th century. Finally, the name Katerini prevailed.

Katerini was probably founded during the Ottoman rule. Pieria, as well as the city of Katerini, was liberated from the Turkish yoke during the First Balkan War (1912-1913), by the 7th Infantry Division. In 1931, the Municipal Market of Katerini was built. In this decade, with the arrival of refugees, the city’s population doubled. Many residents come from Thrace, and specifically from Artesco.
