What should I know about Taxiarchis?

Taxiarchis is approximately 58 kilometers from Thessaloniki airport. It is located in a wooded area on Mount Holomontas in the prefecture of Halkidiki. It is a traditional village built with stone. Taxiarchis is famous for its mushrooms, wild herbs, mountain tea and other local products, such as Holomontas beans and potatoes. The local women’s association also produces local products such as jams and pickles or compotes. The village of Taxiarchis is a tourist destination all year round!

The area of Taxiarchis is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. There are traditional guesthouses, open all year round, offering pleasant and comfortable accommodation to all visitors. In addition, in Taxiarchis there is the University Forest which organized years ago the systematic cultivation of fir trees which gave work to the permanent residents and now, the area produces 70% of the Christmas trees in Greece.

Worth seeing: the “Kato Pigadi” fountain, the traditional houses and old mansions, scattered in the village, the stone-built central square, the Hani, the central basilica with a domed church and the various chapels in and around the village, the forest museum, where you can see exhibitions of the flora and fauna of the area and finally the Mushroom Festival that takes place every September, where the villagers gather fresh mushrooms from the mountain of Holomont and fry them while the women of the village cook mushroom pies.
