What should I know about Afitos?
Afitos or Athitos is located 73 km from Thessaloniki airport and is a popular tourist destination in Halkidiki. It is located on the first peninsula of Halkidiki, Kassandra. It is only 3 km from Kallithea, a well-known tourist resort, the center of nightlife.
Afitos is considered as the “Balcony” of Kassandra, as it offers an amazing view of the Toronean Gulf and looks like an island settlement. It is worth wandering through the narrow cobbled streets and taking pictures of the stone mansions and picturesque corners. It harmoniously combines human presence with nature. It is a perfect solution for an idyllic vacation.
Points worth seeing:
-The old houses built from the local porolith and the cobbled streets
-The old doors of the houses of Afytos, which were created with great passion by 70 artists painting their own ideas, on the occasion of the wonderful activity of the artist Vassilis Pavlis. -The three-aisled, wooden-roofed basilica with a dome
– the church of Agios Dimitrios, built in 1859 and which is the jewel of the village, in the center of the square.
The visitor deserves to notice the peculiar architecture of the temple, its old icons and the stone carvings on the outside of the south wall.
-The famous sculptures of Vassilis Pavlis that are scattered throughout the village.
-The Folklore Museum of Athytos housed in the impressive mansion of Aletras, where you will be able to see tools and utensils used in the past by the inhabitants of the area.
