What should I know about Nea Potidea?
Nea Potidaia is located at a distance of 58 kilometers from Thessaloniki airport immediately after Nea Moudania. Nea Potidea is also known as the Gate of Kassandra, because it is the only entrance to the peninsula of Kassandra!
The inhabitants of Nea Potidaia, refugees in 1923 from Eastern Thrace and Kalolimnos, built the current settlement on the ruins of the ancient city of Potidaia. Three sides of it are wetted by the sea, thanks to a canal that connects Thermaikos with Toroneos gulf, which was opened for the first time in the 4th century BC, while a number of ancient objects have been found which are exhibited in museums in the region of Halkidiki and Thessaloniki. Potidea was the center of the political life of Halkidiki in ancient times, together with Olynthos.
The modern town is a popular tourist resort with a wide sandy beach, many bars and traditional taverns near the sea, shops, camping, while the tourist during the summer can enjoy local summer festivals and cultural events. The area of Nea Potidaia has luxury hotels, modern and large to small rooms for rent.
The historical canal of Nea Potidea, which is already mentioned since the time of Strabo (1st century AD), was finally opened in 1930, while along it the fortifications of the ancient city can be seen.
